What is Perception Box?

Perception Box is a concept used to describe the factors that constrain our perception of reality. You can learn more here.

How does the proposal process work?

You can find detailed step-by-step instructions here.

How much money can I apply for?

Up to $900,000 over three years. This includes all overhead and indirect costs.

How do I know if I am eligible?

Carefully read the RFP Criteria on the RFP Page.

Are there any other opportunities to apply for funding?

Not at the moment. If any new opportunities come up, we will announce it on our website.

When will I find out if my idea has been accepted?

This information is available in the timeline section of the RFP page. All dates are subject to change.

My project proposal relies on self- and other-perception, as well as behavioral measures, to determine whether the intervention worked, there will be no neuro endpoint. Is this acceptable?

It would be ideal to have something to track, and it would make for a stronger proposal. That said, a neuro endpoint is not mandatory.

Does the 'relevant previous grants' relate only to the grants of the PI, or also to the institute?

It would need to be grants where the PI played a role. This is similar to adding a grant to your CV.

If we plan to submit a proposal on behalf of a small research group, is there a limit on the number of group members who can be included under the PI?

There is no policy about the size of the research group, but you must justify the number in accordance with the budget.

Does a foreign institute need to have a NCAGE code or UEI number to apply to your grants?

We don’t require specific types of codes as this will depend on the country where the institution is based.

To what extent is the proposed research supposed to focus on expanded/contracted perception box states vs. effect of intervention?

The research can focus on either providing it can be justified within the scope of the RFP.

Will you be cross-referencing the contributors/collaborators if they also submit a LOI?

Yes, but we may allow people to be involved in more than one project at our discretion.

What will the full proposal requests entail?

The full proposals will be longer and more detailed (about ten pages). Two webinars will be provided to help guide applicants. The most noteworthy additional sections are:

  • Project Background Information

  • Aims and Hypotheses

  • Study Design

  • Budget Spreadsheet

Do we need IRB approval by the time we submit and LOI?

No, it is not required at this stage. For funded proposals, IRB and other relevant regulatory or ethical approvals must be obtained prior to funding.

Are there any constraints on what the budget can cover?

There are some constraints following generally accepted legal guidelines and best practices. That said, the budget can be fairly flexible. For example it can include study materials, PhD students, subject recruitment, and data analysis.

If a project can be done in less than 3 years would it be possible to get more than US$300,000 per year because the time is shorter?

Yes, pending negotiations with TBD at the contracting stage.

What is the distinction between the data storage component of the study design and data management?

The Data Storage section in the Study Design field requires just a couple of sentences to provide an overview of where data will be stored and how it can be shared. The data management field should include more details about this, including how data will be curated and what tools and processes will be used.

Are consultant costs considered overhead?

No, consultant costs can be included in the Direct Costs section.
